ADD or Bipolar?

WebMD has a good article talking about how children with Bipolar are sometimes misdiagnosed as having ADD. This can be harmful to the person with bipolar since ADD stimulant medications can trigger mania in people with bipolar.

Sometimes an ADDer is misdiagnosed with bipolar and sometimes the person has both. They compare and contrast the two conditions. Here’s their main page on Bipolar.

There is a growing epidemic in the cyberworld. A scourge which causes more suffering with each passing day. This debilitating scourge ebbs and flows but there is hardly a blogger among us who has not felt it’s dark touch. We’re speaking, of course, about blog depression.

The Impact of ADHD in America

Filed under: ADD Awareness, ADD Treatment Pete Quily @

Here’s a detailed article that talks about the impact of ADHD in America.

Here’s Dr. Lenard Adler, director of the Adult ADHD Program at NYU School of Medicine, describing one case of ADHD.

“I have an executive who, prior to treatment, got his standard yearly review at work,” he reports. “It read like a checklist of symptoms of ADHD: ‘Clients like you but all the work comes up against the last minute; things that don’t have to become crises, become crises; you drift off in meetings; you have potential but the quality of your work is not what it could be.’ ”

New patent for SPI-339, Potential ADHD Drug

Filed under: ADD Medication, ADD Treatment Pete Quily @

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals got a patent for a potential ADHD drug SPI-339. Filed under

Methods for Treating Cognitive/Attention Deficit Disorders Using Tetrahydroindolone Analogues and Derivatives.

SPI-339 is an orally available small molecule drug that has potential applications for the treatment of attention disorders, memory acquisition and other cognitive functions. Potential applications of SPI-339 include treatment of children and adults with ADHD. Although the precise mechanism of action of SPI-339 is not known, it is known to be different from that of the stimulants that are commonly used to treat ADHD.

Apparently they’ll be out licensing the drug for further development and marketing

Higher Income + Younger Doctor + Bigger City= Better chance of ADD Medical Treatment in US

Florida State University Economics Professor Farasat Bokhari co-authored a study published in the journal Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety that found wide variations in the distribution of stimulant medication to treat ADHD.

The researchers found that the counties where ADHD drug use was the highest had higher per capita income, lower unemployment rates, greater population density and more access to health care, meaning more HMOs and a higher percentage of people enrolled in them. Given the cost-saving objectives of HMOs, the researchers theorized that HMOs could be authorizing ADHD drug therapy because it is cheaper than counseling.

Out of Google’s Sandbox at Last! Pagerank =4

Filed under: Misc. Pete Quily @

My blog finally got out of Google’s sandbox!

Google doesn’t usually apply Pagerank to a site until it’s been around for a while. Pagerank can range from 0, not ranked at all to 10, ie Apple. Interestingly Microsoft is only a 9. Sometimes people call not having your page ranked for a while by Google as being in Google’s sandbox.

So now Adult ADD Strengths no longer has a Pagerank of 0, but a Pagerank of 4. Done it in less than 4 months with about 100 posts. Blogs are pretty useful that way. Lot quicker than it took to get my website to a Pagerank of 4. Here’s a quick way to check a website’s Pagerank
