Yes Jana-Lyn, it is sad that this got through to the LA Times, it’s not the NY Times by a long shot but it’s not a small hamlet paper either. Hopefully more ADDers will write responses to that sort of ignorance and stigma. If ADDers don’t respond we’ll just get more articles like Karen Klein’s.

Way to go Gina!

I saddens me that drivel such as this LA times “Article” makes its way through the editing room. As a former journalist and a 2 time diagnosed person with ADHD I am not only insulted by Ms. Klein, but it is obviuous that her “information” is cherry picked and DEAD WRONG…my professors would have had my head on a platter if I wrote like that! I have had ex-bosses who did not believe in ADHD (worked in the Federal Government, no less) and applied this attitude as a means of denying reasonable accomodations and blaming the person with the disorder.They cannot look at what they are doing is not only wrong, BUT ILLEGAL.
Gina, you are a true inspiration. Ms. Klein needs to go back to school and be re-taught real journalism.

Excellent piece! The problem that Ms. Klein has is similar to those of other A.D.H.D. deniers: they are frozen in cultural time (”what’s a homemaker?”) and they like simple answers (though not necessarily the right answers) to complex questions (”advertising causes increased diagnosis/drug usage”).

Agreed Debra. Also it’s 80% genetic so if a child has it, pretty high odds one or more of the parents have it too.

Yes Niika, you can abuse ADD medication just like you can abuse other prescription medications.

You also run the risks of dealing with the harm abusing prescription meds can bring including addiction. Fortunately they’re not addictive for us ADDers, since we’re often known to forget to take our meds. And while they speed up non ADDers they do the opposite for ADDErs, they calm us down, so we can focus and finish things.

Your rebuttal was excellent… but there is another use of ADHD medications, aside from its obvious uses for people with ADHD, and that is as an appetite suppressant or a “study aid”. Medications like Ritalin and Adderall are popular among teenagers in the drug trade for those reasons — and they’re fairly cheap, too, from what I know. So it’s not just people with ADHD who are taking these meds, although that’s a nice thought.
