Ask To Screen For ADHD In Rehabs, Homeless Shelters & Arrestees

If you look at the decades of research, we ADHD adults and teens have much higher rates of substance use disorder, homelessness, and crime.

But if we are diagnosed with ADHD and treated with ADHD meds?

40 years of research shows we have lower rates of all three.

But the problem is that the majority of adults with ADHD are either undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with depression, and anxiety disorders, etc., and the smallest number in the biggest media coverage and biggest social media coverage and stigma is overdiagnosed.

All three require having all doctors and therapists properly trained on ADHD so we get a competent diagnosis.

One way to achieve this is to ask your provincial, state and civic politicians to screen people in rehabs, homeless shelters, and people arrested by the police for ADHD. Politicians are tribalistically local.

Showing higher rates of ADHD in SUD, homelessness and crime in your city/province/state is harder to ignore than seeing it online. Media and social media are more likely to cover local stories, and that can lead to political pressure to take action on ADHD.

Here are some of the research you can send your local politicians to increase the odds that they might say yes to screening us. There is much, much more.

Substance Use Disorder

23% of people with SUD had ADHD meta-analysis showed.

And some studies are even higher.

One showed that 55%  of crystal meth users had ADHD; 70% in another study.

Multiple studies show that if people with ADHD are diagnosed and treated with ADHD meds? We have lower rates of SUD.

Homelessness

Five times higher rates of homelesssness for ADHD people.

27% of homeless adults had ADHD 33 year follow up study

43% of homeless 12-18 year olds had ADHD

Crime

I did a blog post showing that 21% To 45% Of Prisoners Have ADHD 15 Studies Show.

Half of people arrested by the UK Metropoltian police & Cambridge University screened positive for ADHD. 60% of  those arrested for drug uses either had ADHD or screened positive for it

Neurodiversity in Custody: Screening Results for ADHD and Autistic Traits in Individuals Arrested by the London Metropolitan Police

3 decades ago, Seattle judge David Admire screened for ADHD & LD in people on probation.

Did a 14 week part time comprehensive program

Reduced the return to prison rate from 68% to 29%

We should screen all parolees, people arrested, and people in jails and prisons for ADHD.
